Super Drink Feature: New Manhattan

Are you still searching for your favorite coffee? Have you worked your way through all the blends yet? Do you feel like you are a Philz connoisseur and you want to try a great new blend? Well, this is definitely one blend you should explore a little further! Let’s go to New York City…or more specifically, the island of Manhattan. A cup of the New Manhattan is a cheap alternative to a plane ticket to the East Coast!

The New Manhattan blend is distinctive in many ways. It’s a medium/light roast that is filled with busy, energetic flavors that mimic the hustle and bustle of Times Square. It has flavors of wine, oak, nuts and fruit…so every sip is delicious.

And for you people watching the acidity in the coffee you drink, you’re in luck — this blend has a low acidity and is medium bodied for great flavor!

Also, try this blend mixed with the Julie’s Ultimate blend for a special treat!

Oh, and did I mention that our New Manhattan blend is on sale during the month of May?? From May 1-31st, buy a pound of New Manhattan, and it’ll only cost you $11. That’s a 31% discount off the regular price…not bad for savings!

This is being featured at all our Philz locations so stop in and grab a pound for you and a friend! And it’s also available online on our website for delivery to your doorstep!!

Philz Coffee on the move!

So you thought that one of our stores was the only place to get a cup of Philz made by our special Philz baristas? Turns out if you happened to be at Whole Foods Franklin store this weekend, you would’ve had a treat.

Our trusty supervisor at 18th Street, Polo, making Philz Coffee outside Whole Foods! How great is this?

Nice pour, Polo!

Stay tuned, there may be more of these little outings in the future. We will try to alert you to them before they happen…

ART @ PHILZ: CHRIS ROBINSON

Like his artist statement says: He’s Chris Robinson and he’s on a journey.

Born and raised in Connecticut and living in California since 2004, Chris started his journey of creative expression when he was toddler. A pencil in one hand and a bottle of milk in the other.

His photos are from all over the globe: India, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Florida.

For more information or to purchase any of the photographs on display, you can contact Chris via email or mobile 949.412.2201.

Coffee date with Robert DeNiro?

You could have a coffee date with the actor, Robert DeNiro, if you bid on his auction for the 2010 RFK Center Auction.

What would you ask him or talk about?

If you could specify the place and suggest Philz, I’m pretty sure he’d be blown away with our New Manhattan blend! Unfortunately, since he’s a proud New Yorker, the coffee date is in the Big Apple…Next time, kids, next time!

Ooh la la, counters in Berkeley!

Another sneak peek at the Berkeley store…Inch by inch, it’s getting closer to completion and that means there will soon be Philz Coffee in the East Bay! Yay!

This week, Phil himself (with his trademark fedora!) measuring it to be just right…and it’s lookin’ pretty snazzy!

Earth Day Happenings

Did you know that it took 125 years to consume the first trillion barrels of oil and the world will consume the next trillion in only 30 years, according to Chevron? — Earth Day 2010 Climate Change Facts pamphlet

Since this is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and we’re a green company here at Philz, I thought it would be a great idea to highlight some of the events happening throughout the week taking advantage of Earth Day this Thursday!

Even if you can’t get out to enjoy the festivities, remember that every time you bring your reusable mug to Philz for a cup of coffee, it’s always the price of a small. Hopefully, that’s all the motivation you need to become greener in your life!

Future Philz Drinker: Mattie!

We had super cute kid, Mattie, come into Philz the other day…and she loved the Philz Fedora in green! She rocked it with style!

Thanks for putting a smile on the customer’s faces, Mattie!

And just in case anyone need a new stylin’ fedora a la Phil (also known as “Philz phine pheathered phelt phedoras”), they are available at every Philz Coffee location and online too!

ART @ PHILZ: CHRISTINA RICHARDS

Currently through May 15th at our 4th & Berry store, Christina Richards’ photography is hanging on the walls.

They are pretty neato…Here are some of the pieces you can see there:

If you are interested in showing at Philz in Palo Alto or in San Francisco, you may submit online portfolios, jpegs or websites via email to Philz Art Director: Georgianne Fastaia of FRESHART SF for consideration.

If you are interested in purchasing the art at any of the Philz store, please contact the artist directly by checking out the promotional material next to the display.

Super duper special blends in the house!

If you frequent Philz enough, you’ve probably run across some great mixtures of our blends. Experimenting baristas and our lovely regulars are due credit for these tasty creations!

Here are some of the standbys — Philtered Soul/Greater Alarm, Julie’s Ultimate/New Manhattan, the “PET” (Philtered Soul/Tesora with a dash of Ether thrown in)…and that’s just to name a few.

Turns out there is a new blend out there named the RUBY! It’s a great mix of 1/4 Julie’s Ultimate and 3/4 Red Sea that Katie, our 24th Street store manager, created!! I’ve heard from @rubyfuerza on Twitter about it and she’s a definite fan! She even tweeted this picture this morning:

So don’t be afraid to mix things up a bit at Philz Coffee…Ask the baristas if they’ve got something to share with you!

Coffee grounds into furniture?

I feel like almost anything can be made of coffee grounds these days. They are super useful (and not just in your garden or your coffee-fueled car)…this time for furniture!

A company named Çurface in the UK has been working and came up with coffee grounds as a fertilizer, slug barrier, furniture, and sheeting. The material is made from 99% recycled materials: recycled coffee ground waste snagged from offices, cafes and factories across the UK, and post-consumer plastic waste. Don’t worry though…the source materials are all cleaned and sterilized before being mixed and turned into sheeting!

Their commercial launch was at Ecobuild in March…

In the near future, Çurface is going to Milan where they will be working on a coffee shop installation.
